En 2012, Benita Calmo visitó su país natal de Todos Santos, Huehuetenango, Guatemala por primera vez en casi 10 años. Se fue a Guatemala con su esposo y su hija, pero regresó a los Estados Unidos con varias prendas tradicionales de su país de origen. Al principio, solo vendía a quienes conocía, pero una vez que se corrió la voz, todos empezaron a preguntarle "¿cuándo vas a traer más ropa tradicional?" A partir de ahí nació Artesanía La Chapincita. En 2014, con la ayuda de su esposo, alquiló un pequeño espacio en International Boulevard y ha estado allí desde entonces. Artesania La Chapincita ha pasado de ser una pequeña organización en la sala de estar de Benita a ahora una pequeña empresa ubicada en el corazón de Oakland, Fruitvale. A través de las dificultades y las pérdidas, Benita todavía ha avanzado con su pequeña empresa y ahora la dirige con su hija mayor a su lado.
In 2012, Benita Calmo visited her home country of Todos Santos, Huehuetenango, Guatemala for the first time in almost 10 years. She went to Guatemala with her husband and daughter but came back to the United States with various tradional clothing from her home country. At first she only sold to whoever she knew but once word got out, everyone from everywhere began asking her "when are you going to bring more tradional clothing?" From there on, Artesania La Chapincita was born. In 2014, with the help of her husband she rented out a tiny little space on International Boulevard and has been there ever since. Artesania La Chapincita has grown from being a tiny little organization in Benita's living room to now a small business located in the heart of Oakland, Fruitvale. Through hardships and loss, Benita has still moved forward with her small business and is now running it with her oldest daughter by her side.
